Saw palmetto is a palm that grows mainly in the southeastern United States. The active ingredient of saw palmetto comes from the oil extracted from berries at the tops of trees. Traditionally, saw palmetto is taken as a supplement for symptoms of the prostate and of a spastic bladder.

Evidence has been submitted that regular use of saw palmetto can relieve the symptoms of Benign Prostate Hypertrophy (BPH). The effect of saw palmetto may be rather slow but it is a natural remedy without shown toxicity.

Some European studies suggest that saw palmetto relieves some urinary tract symptoms. In one study that included both saw palmetto and the prescription drug Proscar, it was found that both reduced urinary tract symptoms in 2/3 of the men involved.
